From Katsu to Code: The Birth of opmodal

Let us take you back in time as our co-founder, Colin Kerr, shares our story.

“It started with two full-time jobs, late nights, and a plate of katsu curry. After another long day navigating corporate chaos, Nick and I sat down in a Wagamama booth, mentally drained but still determined. Between bites of crispy chicken and rice, one of us finally said, “There has to be a better way to manage this madness.”

That was the spark. What began as a casual gripe over dinner became an after-hours mission to solve a very real problem we’d seen in the corporate world: businesses were struggling to operate and transform effectively. Complexity was everywhere, and the tools that were supposed to help only made things worse.

We didn’t have all the answers that night, but we had a clear idea of what we wanted to build: a toolkit that cut through the noise and delivered real clarity. Something simple, effective, and practical.

Simplicity as the Guiding Principle

The inspiration for opmodal came not just from frustration with complexity, but also from the simplicity of the meal in front of us. A katsu curry doesn’t overcomplicate things. Three elements - crispy chicken, rice, and golden curry sauce - come together in perfect balance.

Nothing extraneous, nothing missing.

We realised businesses needed the same kind of simplicity: a system that focuses on the essentials, avoids unnecessary features, and delivers results. Too often, we’d seen organisations drowning in sprawling processes, Excel templates and overengineered tools. The result was confusion, not clarity.

Building After Hours

opmodal wasn’t created in a day, nor during regular business hours. It was built on evenings and weekends, pieced together between demanding full-time roles. With laptops on kitchen tables we spent countless nights refining the concept, fuelled by coffee and the occasional takeaway.

The process was a lesson in focus. Every feature had to earn its place. If it didn’t solve a real problem or add clear value, it was scrapped. This discipline of simplicity shaped the core philosophy of opmodal: solutions should be powerful, but never overwhelming.

Designed for Clarity

At its heart, opmodal is about empowering businesses to operate and transform with confidence. The platform distils complex operations into clear, actionable insights, enabling organisations to focus on what truly matters. It’s not about flashy features or endless dashboards; it’s about creating tools that work intuitively and efficiently.

Just as a good katsu curry combines its elements into a cohesive dish, opmodal brings together the core ingredients of operational success - people, processes, and tools - into a streamlined system. The result? Businesses can navigate change, manage complexity, and achieve their goals without the usual headaches.

From an Idea to Impact

What started as a late-night project now helps organisations find clarity and control in their operations. The journey from katsu to code taught us a simple truth: even the most complex challenges can be solved when you focus on the essentials.

And yes, we still enjoy a good katsu curry. Because sometimes, simplicity is the best inspiration.”

opmodal: Built after hours, inspired by simplicity, and designed to make operational clarity a reality.
